Thatto Heath Crusaders 50 v 14 Rochdale Mayfield
One of these days we’ll play for 80 minutes and, for the sake of Hatto’s vocal chords, before he’s had to deliver a half time rollicking!
For 40 minutes Heath were poor, unable to hold on to possession and seemingly content on inviting the visitors to their try line. Mayfield, led by numerous Antipodean imports were lively. Tormentor in chief was stand off Eamon Hillen, who in conjunction with loose forward Ackinson, were leading Heath a merry dance.
Hillen finished off a neat Ackinson chip on 8 minutes and put a try on a plate for his right centre on quarter time with a miss pass finding a massive overlap.
Sandwiched either side Heath did manage two tries of their own. The first as Mayfield indiscipline, a sign of things to come, piggybacked Heath to their line for Maddocks to give Glenn a stroll to score.
Good defence forced a knock on on the visitors 20 and four tackles later Stotty found Daz for his customary try.
But silly Heath penalties gave Hillen the chance to send the visitors in ahead at the break with two simple goals.
The second half was only two minutes old when the visitor’s hooker and Captain was sent off for gouging on the floor. With him went any chance of holding on to the lead. Straight from the restart Stotty got the ball away on the last to Froddy whose delicate chip over the defence was taken on the full by DJ who fed Walshy to go over.
Beechy, after having had a rest on the floor looking for his contact lens(!!), drove the b all in and was on hand two tackles later to latch onto Scott’s short pass and burst over.
More indiscipline reduced the visitors to 11 as the prop was sin binned for talking allowing Heath to take complete control.
Another quick play the ball from Scott put Maddocks in for a try to celebrate the birth of his daughter earlier in the week and Scott provided the Lambinator (!!!) with the chance to burst through some wafer thin defence to register another try.
Walshy got his second as quick hands from Froddy and Maddocks put him free and a trademark last tackle cross kick from Stott tapped back by the Salmon gave Jamie another try down the left.
The last word was left to Maddocks (was it twins??) on hand to take advantage of Trumper’s good drive and quick play the ball to scamper under the sticks.
Seven from eight for Quinny brought up the half century which would have been unthinkable at the break.
Stott, Frodsham, Clarke and Maddocks were at the heart of everything good in the second period, but only once Glenn, Martin and the Lamb Shank himself had got to grips with the opposition.
Whether one or two had an eye on a fortnight’s time or not, a very different start will be needed next week to even contemplate keeping the unbeaten run going before anyone thinks of the Landing with the Eagles at Don Valley.
Kieron Maddocks picked up both the Hattons Solicitors Man of the Match Award and the Spectators Award.
